How Authoring a Book Can Position You as an Expert in Your Niche, Especially as a Podcaster

You probably started your podcast because you’ve heard experts say that having a one can boost your credibility, audience reach, and open up doors to new opportunities. What they forget to mention is there are nearly 5 million podcasts out there. Sure, as of June 2024, only 460,526 of those are active podcasts on Apple Podcasts. And while that narrows down some of the competition, getting people to tune in to your show and standing out as an expert in your niche be a challenge, can’t it?

One way to create that authority is by authoring a book. I know, keeping up with your life, business, and podcast is hard enough. How could I even suggest adding a book in the mix? Well, if it’s that credibility, audience reach, and new opportunities you’re looking for, writing a book can position you as an expert and elevate your podcasting career.

1. Establishing Credibility and Authority

When you write a book, you almost instantly position yourself as an authority. I'm sure you've heard that over and over. But why is that?

For your podcast listeners, having a book showcases your expertise beyond the mic. It shows that you’ve dedicated the time to organize your thoughts it into a comprehensive and reliable resource. And since only 3% of people who say they’re going to write a book actually do, this boosts your credibility and makes you a trusted source of information in your niche.

2. Expanding Your Reach and Audience

One of the biggest challenges I’ve heard from podcasters is around growing their audience. A book is a way to open up new avenues for growth. It’s not just about reaching those who already listen to your podcast; it’s about reaching a wider audience––one beyond the mic.

People who buy your book may become loyal podcast listeners. If they’re intrigued by your insights, they may want to hear more from you. Oh, and being an author can lead to speaking events and interviews.

3. Creating New Opportunities

Again, writing a book can unlock all sorts of opportunities–like podcast/media interviews and speaking gigs. When you have the title of “published author,” it showcases your expertise and makes you a more appealing prospect for these types of opportunities.

Event organizers and media outlets are always looking for knowledgeable–and articulate–experts. So when you have both a book and a podcast, you’re covering both bases!

4. Strengthening Your Business/Brand

Your book can become a part of your business/brand. Yes, as a podcaster, your brand is built on your voice and ideas. But a book reinforces this and acts as a a solid foundation for your identity as an expert. It sets you apart from others in your niche who may not have taken this major step yet.

Ready to Start Your Author Journey?

If you're ready to take your knowledge and expertise to the next level, I’d suggest at least considering writing a book. It's an amazing way to connect with a different audience and share that knowledge-expanding your reach and creating lasting connections.

The beauty of being an established podcaster is you already know the topics you’re passionate about. You already know the unique insights you can offer and what your audience wants to hear. And the icing on the cake? You already have a plethora of content ready and waiting to be repurposed! That’s right–you can work with your existing content as a starting point to expand upon. How cool is that?
